The new SEAT Ibiza

Unique design, state-of-the-art technology

  • New design language with clear identity
  • Three body styles, perfect for every lifestyle
  • Thrilling driving fun thanks to innovative technologies
  • Ibiza 1.2 TDI CR E-Ecomotive with 89 grams/km CO2
  • 1.4 TSI and 110 kW (150 hp) now in the Ibiza ST, too
The next generation of the successful Spanish model is here –the new SEAT Ibiza captures the heart with its young, emotional design and fun-to-drive zest, and convinces the head with its innovative technologies and further improved functionality and quality. Plus, the new line-up offers enormous breadth to meet every individual demand –from the compact and sporty three-door Ibiza SC, to the dynamic and universal five-door Ibiza, to the elegantly practical Ibiza ST estate car. When it comes to engines, the line-up extends from the extremely efficient Ibiza E-Ecomotive with 89 grams of CO2/km to the exceptionally sporty Ibiza FR with 110 kW (150 hp). There are two strengths in particular that are common to all versions –a very high standard of quality and outstanding value for money. Market launch of the new SEAT Ibiza is scheduled for spring 2012.

The Ibiza is one of the best-selling models in its segmentthroughout Europeand the average age of its buyers is the youngest in its market segment. Design has long been one of the Ibiza’s foremost strengths -named as the most important reason for purchase by customers, and to the same degree across all three body variants. This trend is set to continue in future –with its modern, fresh and optimistic look, the new Ibiza marks a further significant development of the SEAT design identity and prepares the way for future models.

“The Ibiza is an important foundation forour brand. With the new generation, we are taking a clear step forward –the fresh and young design language speaks to SEAT’s unique and distinctive character. It underscores the precision and quality of our products,” says James Muir President of SEAT, S.A.“This makes the new Ibiza a crucial element in SEAT’s forward strategy. It will grow its success even further, not least in our new market of China.”

Beneath its striking design, the new Ibiza offers an impressive array of innovative technologies. The latest-generation state-of-the-art TDI and TSI power units, the DSG transmissions and the start/stop system combine dynamics with exceptional efficiency and guarantee SEAT’s signature driving fun.

“The new Ibiza is a clear showcase for SEAT’s technical expertise. Emotional design, a thrilling drive and an exceptionally high quality standard deliver an extremely distinctive product character. The Ibiza is the sportiest and most versatile offering in its competitive field,” says Dr. Matthias Rabe, Vice President for Research and Development at SEAT, S.A.

The bodyshell –three variants, one for every requirement

With its three bodyshell variants, the new SEAT Ibiza fits perfectly into every lifestyle. The five-door Ibiza, the three-door Ibiza SC and the Ibiza ST estate are not only design masterpieces, they also offer an interior that is exceptionally spacious and flexible for this class of vehicle.

The new Ibiza –universal five-door

On its market launch in 2008, the SEAT Ibiza was the first model on the all-new Volkswagen Group platform developed for this segment. This means not only more stability and comfort, but also an excellent standard of safety. The five-door with its sporty, eye-catching design comes with a luggage capacity of 292 litres. With such a generous amount of space, the Ibiza is ideally equipped for the practical challenges of everyday life.

The new Ibiza SC –sports coupé with three doors

At SEAT, sporting character is anchored firmly in the brandphilosophy. With the three-door Ibiza SC, the company offers a model with a distinctly dynamic design and incredibly neat dimensions (4,043millimetres longandjust 1,428 millimetres high). Yet, behind the rear bench is room for 284 litres of luggage. The sports coupé boasts exceptionally agile handling characteristics, without making any compromises in comfort.

The new Ibiza ST –the most beautiful estate in its class

With its harmonious and highly elegant estate bodyshell, the SEAT Ibiza ST offers a wide range of possibilities for everyday and leisure use. The Ibiza ST offers an extremely high level of functionality, without making any concessions in its design. Despite its sporty lines, the storage capacity behind the rear bench is generous at 430 litres. There are two possibilities for increasing the load volume, both requiring just a few simple movements. The fast version is to fold the rear seat back onto the bench; as of the Style equipment line, the rear bench is split 60:40. Alternatively, you can first tilt the seat cushions upright; this delivers a virtually flat load surface, while the compact rear headrests fit into niches on the underside of the bench. Loaded to the roof, the Ibiza ST then offers up to 1,164 litres of storage space. There iseven plenty of room for two bicycles with their front wheels removed. The maximum load capacity is 515 kilograms.

The standard equipment package for the Ibiza ST includes illumination and bag hooks in the luggage compartment. As an option, SEAT can deliver nets andadditional box compartmentunder the trayfor the load compartment. The accessories programmeincludes mounts and fixtures for the transport of skis, bicycles and roof boxes, as well as a tow hook. Depending on the engine version, the SEAT Ibiza ST can tow up to 1,200 kilograms (braked, on an 8 percent incline).

The new design –attention to detail

Sporty character and high product quality are written all over the new Ibiza’s face –SEAT Design stands for technology and precision, as well as for youthful avant garde. The distinctive centrepiece is the trapezoidal grille featuring the SEAT logo. The flatter proportions and horizontal honeycomb structure of the grille and the lower air intake emphasize the width of the new Ibiza. The bumpers front and rear have been redesigned with a look that is particularly accentuated on the sporty Ibiza FR version. Standard equipment on the FR and available as an option on the other models are the large fog lamps with integrated cornering lights.

The sophisticated design of the headlamps bears testament to the enormous attention afforded by SEAT to the details. The edgy style of the lamps is a hallmark feature of the new SEAT design language, while being perfectly integrated into the Ibiza’s sculptural form. The headlamps are available in two halogen versions or with optional bi-xenon lamps and LED daytime running lights. The latter trace the form of the headlamps to deliver a unique light signature, as do the optional LED rear lights (standard on the FR).

Clear and athletic character

From the side, the new Ibiza looks like a precisely hewn sculpture on wheels. The characteristic “Línea Dinámica” runs from the headlamps over the powerfully drawn wheel arches to the rear. A second, equally sharp character line runs across the muscular rear shoulders to the rear lamps. These powerful lines and the interplay of taut surfaces lend the Ibiza an athletic character –on both the three-door sports coupé and the universal five-door.

And even the functional estate car conveys an unmatched look of dynamism –without any restriction to its exceptional utility. The self-confident design of the rear end gives the Ibiza ST a very powerful sign-off. The roof-edge spoiler with integrated third brake light protrudes a little beyond the large rear windscreen. The rear lights emphasise the width of the vehicle with their horizontal, inward running design. At the spot where their extended lines meet is the large SEAT logo that –as on the five-door and SC, too –serves as the handle for the rear hatch.

“The new-generation Ibiza fits perfectly into the SEAT brand identity. It has a powerful and solid stance, it displays a dynamic character and always remains refined and self-confident,” says Alejandro Mesonero-Romanos, Head of SEATDesign.

The interior –high quality on the inside, too

The emotional power of the exterior design is also reflected in the interior of the new SEAT Ibiza –with a forceful but extremely minimalist and clearly structured cockpit design. The exceptional feeling of quality, the high precision of the workmanship, the wide choice of colours and materials ranging all the way to fine leather upholstery serve to underscore SEAT’s standards. The level of detail can be sensed throughout the new Ibiza –in the new three-spoke steering wheel, in the new control unit for theClimatronic, in the new paint surfaces. The focus, however, always remains on functionality –the new instrument binnacle with its improved display is one example, the significantly larger glove compartment, another. With a generous storage volume of 10.7 litres, this storage unitnow offers space for a lot more accessories and useful items than simply a pair of gloves.

The seats in the SEAT Ibiza are ergonomically formed, with a sporty, low-slungmounting position that can also be positionedhigher, according to preference. The seats are generously padded with cold foam –they combine comfort with excellent body support and are outstanding over long distances. In the Ibiza FR, the exclusive sports seats have pronounced side cushions –providing the body with exceptionallyfirm lateral grip.

A further comfort factor is the steering wheel, which is adjustable for height and reach. The steering wheel and gearknob are optionally available clad in leather, a feature that is standard for the FRline. In the Ibiza FR the steering wheel has its own distinctandeven sportier design.

All display and operating elements are conceived so that the driver can read and use them completelyintuitively. Beneath theelegant cover of the redesigned instrument binnacle are the large dials for engine revs and road speed recessed into sporty tubularsurrounds. The display between the dials shows fuel level, temperature and information from the on-board computer, which isstandard equipment as of the Style line.

The new control unit for the air conditioning is located in the lower section of the centre console. A manually controlled air conditioningunitis optionalwith the Reference line. For the Style and FR lines, SEAT offers optionally the fully automatic Climatronic system, which shows the selected temperature in a large illuminated display.

Above the air conditioning control is the operating unit for the audio system, which also incorporates an aux-in connection. A USB interface and Bluetooth hands-free set-up are among the options.

The tautly executeddashboard, circular air vents, the three-spoke steering wheel and a short gearstick –the sporty, emotional character that distinguishes the exterior of the SEAT Ibiza carries through to the inside, too. All details of the interior display meticulousworkmanship, recognizable in the quality of the materials. All buttons and switches have precise movementswithclearlydefined travel and a satisfying “click”operation; the dashboard surface is padded with soft foam.

In the Style and FR equipment lines, black leather upholstery is available as an option for the seats. For even more individualisation, there is an additional Design package.

The Drive –sporty and efficient engines

The engine line-up for the new SEAT Ibiza is broad-ranging and consists of new-generation three and four-cylinder power units. The range of petrol units extends from the incredibly economical 1.2 litre with 44 kW (60 hp) to the energetic 1.4 TSI with supercharger and turbocharger. 110 kW (150 hp) and the standard-fit DSG transmission catapult the Ibiza to 100 km/h in just 7.6seconds, and onwards to an impressive top speed of 212 km/h. In the new Ibiza, this power unit is now also available for the ST estate version, which will wear the FR badge for the first time.

Particular efficiency is delivered by the Ibiza 1.2 TSI Ecomotive –the state-of-the-art power unit with 77 kW (105 hp) delivers refined drive with its maximum torque of 175 Newton metres from 1,550 r/min to 4100 r/min, yet sips on an average of just 4.9 litres/100 km –thanks also to the start/stop technology that is fitted as standard.

The TDI engines with common-rail injection are even more efficient when it comes to fuel consumption and emissions. The 1.2 TDI CR makes do with just 3.8 litres/100 km (Right Hand Drive: 3.9 litres/100 km) and achieves excellent CO2emissions with 99 grams/km (Right Hand Drive: 102 grams/km). The 1.6 TDI CR, available with an output of either 66 kW (90 hp) or 77 kW (105 hp), also boasts exemplary fuel consumption at 4.2 litres/100 km(CO2emissions –109 grams/km)for the 66kW version and 4.7l and 24g/km for the 77kW.

The sporty pinnacle of the Ibiza diesel line-up is marked by the 2.0 TDI CR with 105 kW (143 hp) –shared beween the Ibiza SC FR and Ibiza five-door FR. No competitor in this segment offers such a powerful diesel, and no other masters the combination of performance and efficiency so effectively –its performance off-the-mark (0 to100 km/h in 8.2 seconds) and top speed of 210 km/h is balanced by an average fuel consumption of just 4.6 litres/100 km (CO2emissions –119 grams/km).

The Ibiza 1.2 TDI CR E-Ecomotive –particularly efficient

The efficiency highlight is the Ibiza 1.2 TDI CR E-Ecomotive with an average fuel consumption of just 3.4 litres/100 km. This equates to a first-class CO2figure of 89 grams/km –in all bodyshell variants. Yet the compact hi-tech TDI delivers attractive performance with its 55 kW (75 hp) and its highlyrespectable torque of 180 Newton metres. The Ibiza 1.2 TDI CR E-Ecomotive is fitted as standard with start/stop technology that contributes to fuel saving without the driver having to make a conscious effort. When the car stops at a red light, for instance, and the driver goes intoneutral, the start/stop system switches the engine off. As soon as the clutch pedal is depressed again, the engine immediately restarts automatically. The car is also equipped with a recuperation system that regenerates energy during every braking manoeuvre. This reduces the load on the engine and lowers fuel consumption.

The efficient Aerodynamic package on the Ibiza 1.2 TDI CR E-Ecomotive incorporates an enclosed radiator grille and a lower air intakethat optimises airflow within the engine compartment. It also includes a 40 millimetre longer front spoiler, a spoiler on the rear hatch, special deflectors on the rear wheel arches and 15-inch wheels with closed covers. These modifications result in a drag coefficient of 0.30. A shift recommendation display and slightly increased tyre pressure (2.9 bar front, 2.7 bar rear) complete the efficiency savings package of the Ibiza 1.2 TDI CR E-Ecomotive.

Hi-tech transmissionsand running gear

Just as modern as the engines are the transmissions in the new SEAT Ibiza. Alongside perfectly spaced ratios within the five and six-speed manual gearboxes, a number of engines are offered with DSG transmissions either as standard equipment or as an option. This dual-clutch transmission offers not only the comfort of an automatic, but also the benefit of compelling efficiency.

The running gear of the new Ibiza boasts an extremely sophisticated layout that has been carefully fine tuned, giving the compact model handling characteristics that are as sporty as they are safe. The ESP electronic stability program is standard equipment. Engines as of 77 kW/105 hp are combined with the XDS electronic differential lock. When the electronics recognise that there is too little load on the front inside wheel during cornering it applies a brief braking impulse. The system compensates in this way for understeer, making the handling neutral and delivering powerful traction –just like a mechanical differential lock. The well balanced interaction between thevarious electronic systems ensures safety even in difficult situations. A powerful brake system with ABS is another example.

The standard electrohydraulic power steering has a sporty and direct set-up. It delivers a precise feel, fast feedback and intuitive changes of direction. It has a variable output pump, which uses only the amount of energy necessary for steering –remaining inactive during straight-line driving. This solution offers major benefits compared with a purely hydraulic system that permanently circulates its oil volume.

Comprehensive equipment, perfect individualisation

The equipment lines of the Ibiza range have also been revised, independent of bodyshell form. The base model Reference makes a compelling argument with all the key comfort and safety features. Above it is the Style version, which comes with air conditioning as standard. The Ibiza FR sets particularly sporty accents with expressive design elements front and rear, alloy wheels and a leather-clad steering wheel. The FR version of the new Ibiza is available in all bodyshell variants with the 1.2 TSI(77 kW/105 hp) or 1.4 TSI (110 kW/150 hp) petrol engines, or the 1.6 TDI CR (77 kW/105 hp) diesel. Reserved exclusively for the Ibiza SC FR and Ibiza FR is the 2.0 TDI CR (105kW/143 hp) diesel. And every Ibiza can be adapted perfectly to suit personal style and individual preferences with an extensive range of colours, options and accessories.

The Ibiza runs on redesigned wheels ranging from 14 to 17 inches in diameter. For the Reference line, these are 14-inch steel wheels with 175/70 tyres; for Style, there are 15-inch steel wheels with 185/60 tyres. The new Ibiza FR runs on 16-inch alloy wheels clad in 215/45 tyres. SEAT offers sophisticated alloy wheel designs as options for all equipment versions –15-inch for Reference, 16-inch for Style and, for the FR, even a 17-inch model. All tyres have been optimised for rolling resistance without compromising on comfort, safety and handling characteristics.

The new SEAT Ibiza is built for all global markets entirely at the state-of-the-art SEAT plant in Martorell near Barcelona. The new generation of the Ibiza will also be introduced in Chinain 2012. SEAT’s combination of young, dynamic design-driven attributes with state-of-the-art technology, quality and precision -as epitomised by the Ibiza -will be well appreciated by discerning Chinese car-buyers.

In Europe, the extremely sporty Cupra will follow later this year –superior performance and thrilling dynamics are guaranteed.

New SEAT Ibiza

New design language with clear identity

  • Improved functionality for day-to-day life
  • Upgraded quality throughout
  • Three body styles, perfect for every lifestyle
  • Thrilling driving fun thanks to state-of-the-art technology
  • Ibiza E-Ecomotive with 89 grams/km CO2
  • 1.4 TSI and 110 kW (150 hp) in Ibiza ST, too
The next generation of the successful Spanish model is here – the new SEAT Ibiza captures the heart with its young, emotional design and fun-to-drive zest, and convinces the head with its innovative technologies and further improved functionality and quality.

The new line-up offers enormous breadth to meet every individual demand – from the compact and sporty three-door Ibiza SC, to the dynamic and universal five-door Ibiza, to the elegantly practical Ibiza ST estate car; from the extremely efficient Ibiza E-Ecomotive with 89 grams of CO2/km to the exceptionally sporty Ibiza FR with 110 kW (150 hp). There are two strengths in particular that are common to all versions – a very high standard of quality and outstanding value for money. Market introduction of the new Ibiza is scheduled for spring 2012.

The Ibiza is one of the best-selling models in its segment across Europe – over 500,000 people so far have opted for one of the sporty, compact models from the Spanish brand. And the average age of Ibiza buyers is the youngest among in its market category. Design has long been one of the Ibiza’s foremost strengths - named as the most important reason for purchase by customers. And this is set to gain even more ground in future – with its modern, fresh and optimistic look, the new Ibiza marks a further significant development of the SEAT design identity and prepares the way for future models.

“The Ibiza is an important foundation of our brand. With the new generation, we are taking a clear step forward – the fresh and young design language speaks to SEAT’s unique and distinctive character. It underscores the precision and quality of our products,” says James Muir, the President of SEAT, S.A. “This makes the new Ibiza a crucial element in SEAT’s forward strategy. Its success will grow even further, not least in our new market of China.”

Beneath its expressive design, the new Ibiza offers an impressive array of innovative technologies. The latest-generation state-of-the-art TDI and TSI power units, the DSG transmissions and the start/stop system combine dynamics with exceptional efficiency and guarantee SEAT’s signature driving fun.

A further example is the SEAT Portable System with touchscreen monitor. It will combine the functions of a navigation system, on-board computer, audio system and hands-free device. While it is fully integrated into the Ibiza’s on-board electronics, it is also removable for use on-the-go. The introduction of SEAT’s Portable System will come later in 2012.

“The new Ibiza is a clear showcase for SEAT’s technical expertise. Emotional design, a thrilling drive and an exceptionally high quality standard deliver an extremely distinctive product character – and now with improved functionality. The Ibiza is the sportiest and most versatile offering in its competitive field,” says Dr. Matthias Rabe, Executive Vice President for Research and Development at SEAT, S.A.

The new design
Sporty character and high product quality are written all over the new Ibiza’s face – SEAT Design stands for technology and precision, as well as for youthful avant garde and the sheer joy of life. The distinctive centrepiece is the trapezoidal grille featuring the SEAT logo. The flatter proportions and horizontal honeycomb structure of the grille and the lower air intake emphasise the width of the new Ibiza. The bumpers front and rear have been redesigned with a look that is particularly accentuated on the sporty Ibiza FR version. Standard equipment on the FR and available as an option on other models are the large fog lamps with integrated cornering light.

Attention to detail
The sophisticated design of the headlamps bears testament to the enormous attention afforded by SEAT to the details. The edgy style of the lamps is a hallmark feature of the new SEAT design language, while being perfectly integrated into the Ibiza’s sculptural form. The headlamps are available in two halogen versions or with optional bi-xenon lamps and LED daytime running lights. The latter trace the form of the headlamps to deliver a unique light signature, as do the optional LED rear lights.

Clear and athletic character
From the side, the new Ibiza looks like a precisely hewn and finely honed sculpture on wheels. The characteristic “Línea Dinámica” runs from the headlamps over the powerfully drawn wheel arches to the rear. A second, equally sharp character line runs across the muscular rear shoulders to the rear lamps. These powerful lines and the interplay of taut surfaces lend the Ibiza an athletic character – on both the coupé-like three-door and the universal five-door. And even the functional estate car conveys an unmatched look of dynamism – without any restriction to its exceptional utility.

“The new-generation Ibiza fits perfectly into the SEAT brand identity. It has a powerful and solid stance, it displays a dynamic character and yet always remains refined and self-confident,” says Alejandro Mesonero-Romanos, Head of SEAT Design.

Premium interior
The emotional power of the exterior design is reflected in the interior, too – with a forceful but extremely minimalist and clearly structured cockpit design. The feeling of quality, the high precision of the workmanship, the wide choice of colours and materials ranging all the way to fine leather upholstery serve to underscore SEAT’s standards. The level of detail can be sensed throughout the new Ibiza – on the steering wheel, in the new design of the climatronic, in the new paint surfaces. The focus, however, always remains on functionality – the new instrument binnacle with its improved display is one example, the significantly larger glove compartment, another. With a generous storage volume of 10.7 litres, this compartment now offers space for a lot more accessories and useful items than simply a pair of gloves.

The perfect package for every requirement
With its three body styles, the new Ibiza fits perfectly to every lifestyle. The three-door Ibiza SC and the five-door Ibiza are not only design masterpieces, but are also very well equipped to cope with the practical challenges of everyday life, with an interior that is generous for this class of vehicle, a luggage volume of 284 or 292 litres and a variable rear bench. The estate bodyshell of the Ibiza ST offers a very high degree of functionality. Despite its sporty design, the load volume of 430 to a maximum of 1,164 litres is surprisingly generous. Even two bicycles will fit inside – with front wheels disassembled, of course.

Sporty and efficient engines
The engine line-up is just as broad. The range of petrol units extends from the  economical 1.2 litre with 44 kW (60 hp) to the immensely perky 1.4 TSI with supercharger and turbocharger. 110 kW (150 hp) and the standard-fit DSG transmission catapult the Ibiza to 100 km/h in just 7.8 seconds, and onwards to an impressive top speed of 212 km/h. In the new Ibiza, this power unit is now also available for the ST estate version. Particular efficiency is delivered by the Ibiza 1.2 TSI Ecomotive – the state-of-the-art power unit with 77 kW (105 hp) delivers refined drive with its maximum torque of 175 Newton metres at just 1,550 r/min, yet sips on an average of just 5.1 litres/100 km – thanks also to the start/stop technology that is fitted as standard.

Top marks in consumption and emissions
The TDI engines are even more efficient when it comes to fuel consumption and emissions. The efficiency highlight is the Ibiza 1.2 TDI E-Ecomotive, also with a start/stop system. Its average fuel consumption is a mere 3.4 litres, equating to a first-class CO2 figure of 89 grams/km – in all bodyshell variants. Yet the compact hi-tech TDI delivers attractive performance with its 55 kW (75 hp) and its very respectable torque of 180 Newton metres. The sporty pinnacle of the Ibiza diesel line-up is the 2.0 TDI with 105 kW (143 hp). No competitor in this segment offers such a powerful diesel; no other masters the combination of performance and efficiency so perfectly – a top speed of 210 km/h comes with an average fuel consumption of just 4.6 litres.

Hi-tech in drive and running gear
Just as modern as the engines in the new Ibiza are the transmissions. Alongside perfectly spaced five and six-speed manual gearboxes, a number of engines are offered with DSG transmissions either as standard equipment or as an option. The precise steering and the perfectly tuned ESP stability control, as well as the XDS electronic differential lock (as of 100 hp) deliver safety even in difficult situations. A powerful brake system with ABS is a case in point. The new Ibiza runs on wheels ranging in size from 15 to 17 inches and sporting a new design.

Comprehensive equipment, perfect individualisation
The equipment lines of the Ibiza range have also been revised, independent of bodyshell form. The base model Reference makes a compelling argument with all the key comfort and safety features. Above it is the Style version, which comes with air conditioning as standard. The Ibiza FR sets particularly sporty accents with accentuated design elements front and rear, alloy wheels and a leather-clad steering wheel. And every SEAT can be adapted perfectly to suit personal style and individual preferences with an extensive range of colours, options and accessories.

And the Ibiza Cupra? Naturally, the super-sporty top model in the Ibiza line-up will also have a successor. Exceptional performance and thrilling dynamics are guaranteed, but not before mid 2012.

SEAT Altea XL Electric Ecomotive

SEAT has today announced it is working on its first electric car designed, developed and manufactured in Spain. And, as well as unveiling the prototype Altea XL Electric Ecomotive, a totally electrically-driven zero-emissions car, the Spanish manufacturer also presented the prototype Leon TwinDrive Ecomotive, a plug-in hybrid.

Over the next few months SEAT will make available units of both models to governmental institutions in Catalonia and Madrid for use in their vehicle fleets. This will provide SEAT with valuable information on use of the cars for assessment with a view to mass production of electric vehicles in the medium-term. The company envisages the launch of its first electric plug-in hybrid car in 2015, to be followed a year later by an all-electric car.

SEAT’s strategy is to commit to a wide range of alternative technologies. To this end the Spanish manufacturer is unveiling two different but complementary models at the same time.

SEAT’s President James Muir stated: “Customers demand a more sustainable form of mobility, but their needs are diverse. Therefore, we believe that a parallel strategy of developing two different technologies will put SEAT in the best position to meet their needs”.

The announcement of the launch of the first electric vehicles coincides with the start of the biggest new product offensive SEAT has known. The company will be launching four new models onto the marketplace over the forthcoming twelve months. The first will be SEAT’s new urban vehicle - the Mii.

Electromobility, a team effort

The future of electromobility in Spain depends not only on vehicles but also their components such as batteries, as well as a recharging infrastructure. For this reason SEAT – the number one industrial investor in R&D in Spain – is heading the CENIT VERDE project. This public-private-partnership between manufacturers, universities, research centres and the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation is taking a holistic research approach to making the electric vehicle a reality in Spain.

The Altea XL Electric Ecomotive, SEAT’s first electric car

The Altea XL Electric Ecomotive blazes the trail for electromobility in Spain. It has a range of 135 kilometres and as with all its vehicles, SEAT guarantees driving pleasure with an engine producing 115 hp (85kW) and 270 Nm of torque. This amount of power translates into a limited top speed of 135 kph. With its roomy passenger compartment and generous boot, the electric Altea XL is equally suitable for family or transport company use.

By intelligent location of the batteries under the rear seats and the boot, there is no intrusion on the passenger compartment. A sophisticated regeneration system with adjustable braking torque optimises energy use. And when the electric Altea XL is parked in the sun, the rooftop photovoltaic cells recirculates fresh air inside the passenger compartment reducing the energy needed afterwards by the climatic system.

Dr. Matthias Rabe, executive Vice-president for R&D, has stated that “SEAT has its electric future assured. With the electric Altea XL we are showing just how mature our technology is”. He added “the electric Altea XL was an intentionally studied choice for the first fleet. It will enable us to experiment with a wide variety of uses”.

Leon TwinDrive, an all-purpose car

The new SEAT Leon TwinDrive Ecomotive is a ground-breaking concept in the field of plug-in hybrids, by combining the advantaged of emission-free driving with the range of a traditional internal combustion engine vehicle. In electric mode the TwinDrive has a range of 52 kilometres, with a top speed of 120 kph. In combined mode (electrical plus combustion) the consumption forecast is only 1.7 litres of fuel or 18.5 kWh per 100 kms, the equivalent of a rock-bottom 39 g/km of CO2, with a top speed of 170 kph.

In the words of Dr. Matthias Rabe, SEAT executive Vice-president for R&D “the Leon TwinDrive Ecomotive is an exciting and ground-breaking solution. Technically, it allows you to drive in all-electric mode, while at the same time enjoying smart hybrid drive”. To which he adds “Thanks to its great range, none of our customers will need to change their lifestyle or transport habits”.

The Ecomotive family, low-emission mobility

The Altea XL Electric Ecomotive and Leon TwinDrive Ecomotive do not constitute SEAT’s first venture into the field of sustainable mobility and commitment to environmental protection. The Spanish brand has a long track record in the manufacture of low-emission vehicles. More than 60% of vehicles marketed in Spain by SEAT have emission levels below 130 g/km of CO2.

The star of the range is the Ibiza Ecomotive, with a combined consumption of just 3.4 litres and emissions of no more than 89 g/km from its 75 hp (55 kW) engine. Additionally, SEAT continues to broaden the Ecomotive range by adding versions of the Leon, Altea, Altea XL, Alhambra and SEAT’s new urban car the Mii, with equally benchmark consumption figures.

Martorell, a sustainable production plant

SEAT has extended its environmental commitment to its car-manufacturing processes, furthering different projects with a single aim – to reduce CO2 emissions and make a more sustainable and efficient use of energy resources. By way of example, one innovation at SEAT has been the implementation of EuroEnergest, an energy consumption monitoring system enabling more efficient energy use and savings of 3,900 tonnes of CO2 per year.

Its strategic approach to environmental protection has earned SEAT several plaudits. One of the most recent was the first-ever awarding of the ISO 50.001 standard in energy efficiency to a Spanish company.

‘SEAT in the Sun’, from 4 to 8 MW in less than a year

The most outstanding project within its strategy is ‘SEAT in the Sun’, the largest rooftop photovoltaic facility in Spain, and the biggest of its kind in the European automotive industry. Equally innovative was the decision to install the photovoltaic plaques on the temporary holding areas for vehicle protection. Capacity has doubled from 4 to 8 megawatts over the past few weeks thanks to the start-up of a new stage.

Next year will see the completion of this project with connection of the final stage, taking installed power to 10.6 MW. This means that ‘SEAT in the Sun’ will have reduced CO2 emissions by 6,200 tonnes per year.

From Martorell to the world, by train

As a company, SEAT is also a pioneer in the use of the railway for the transport of vehicles and components. In 2008 the company opened Autometro, a rail link between Martorell and the Port of Barcelona for the transport of finished cars. Currently SEAT exports more than 40% of its production by sea, and 95% of those vehicles reach the Port of Barcelona via rail. In 2009 the company set up Cargometro, linking SEAT’s Martorell production plant with the Zona Franca facility. Taken together, the two rail links take some 57,000 heavy lorry trips off the roads – a reduction of 2,600 tonnes in CO2 emissions per year.

Going forward, the Mediterranean corridor will enable SEAT to strengthen its rail strategy even more by increasing its current level of export by train from the current 11% to 30%.

SEAT Mii

SEAT has taken the wraps off the new city car that completes the VW Group’s up! family. And it’s called the Mii.

Featuring a much narrower ‘arrowhead’ family grille and bigger headlights than the up! and Skoda CitiGo, the Mii is aimed squarely at younger buyers, with the brand keen to emphasise its fun handling dynamics, light weight and new technology.

The Mii’s styling is pitched much closer to the CitiGo than the up! – with the same enlarged rear windows and half-metal ootlid. However, the front and rear light clusters, alloy wheels and front bumper are unique.

After launching in Spain in three-door form later this year, the Mii will arrive in UK dealers next spring. It will be powered
by a choice of efficient new three-cylinder petrol engines, with either 59bhp or 69bhp.

Thanks to its light 854kg kerbweight, fuel economy is excellent, but an ultra-efficient Ecomotive version of both cars will be offered soon after launch. This uses a combination of stop-start and regenerative brakes to ensure emissions fall below the 100g/km barrier and make the cars exempt from road tax.

There’s a choice of a five-speed manual transmission or a new ‘ASG’ robotised manual, which uses a pair of electric motors to help give smooth automatic changes. This has been developed to avoid having to use the heavier – and more expensive – twin-clutch DSG gearbox from larger models.

SEAT has also announced that at least one sporty special edition will be available straight from launch. This will come with a range of cosmetic options, including dark-tinted windows, a lower suspension set-up and racier interior trim.

A spokesman said the Mii “will definitely cost less than £8,000”, but couldn’t confirm if prices will drop as low as the CitiGo (see below). Top-of-the-range versions will get the integrated portable navigation system as standard.

A more practical five-door Mii will follow later next year.

New SEAT EXEO & EXEO ST

NEW SEAT EXEO AND EXEO ST
More style, even more efficiency

  • New face further enhances the distinctive design
  • New bi-xenon headlamps with LED daytime running lights
  • TDI engines with improved efficiency across the board
  • First-class quality and precision in finish and equipment
  • Further improvements to emissions & fuel consumption in 2012 Exeo Ecomotive is targeted to emit less than 120g of CO2 thanks to addition of Start/Stop
From the autumn, Exeo’s distinctive design will be further enhanced and the powerful TDI engines become even more efficient. The new upgrade adds even more appeal to the sporty, comfortable Exeo and the spaciously dynamic Exeo ST. All diesel versions benefit from a decrease in CO2 emissions of around 7 grams per km – resulting in a CO2 figure of 129 grams per kilometre (Exeo ST, 132 g/km), making the Exeo one of the most efficient, low-emission vehicles in its class. Fuel consumption will also drop below the current combined figure of 5,2 l per 100 km (5,3 l on the ST).

And the introduction of these improvements to Exeo’s efficiency are just the first step, with additional improvements to Exeo’s efficiency scheduled to arrive in 2012 thanks to the fitment of SEAT’s Start/Stop engine technology.

The addition of this technology - which stops the engine when the car is stationary, such as when waiting at a red traffic light – will significantly reduce consumption and emissions, with a target figure of sub-120g for CO2. Exeo’s dynamic driving performance will not be compromised despite the reduction in consumption and emissions.

This low level of emissions will make Exeo one of the most efficient cars in its class and will further enhance its competitive appeal, particularly for fleets where emissions are a key purchasing factor.

The many strengths of the SEAT Exeo include its clear design language. With the redesigned front end, both the saloon and the estate are now even more expressive. The new, optional bi-xenon headlamps adopt the “arrow” theme that is so characteristic of SEAT design. The integrated daytime running lights in energy saving LED technology are sculpted into sharply defined, angular “wings”, giving the Exeo a precise and dynamic look.

New headlamps show attention to detail

The sophisticated design of this light unit is clear evidence of the detail with which the Exeo was designed and developed. Together with the new, honeycomb grille insert, the LED rear lights and the all-new 17 and 18-inch alloy wheel designs, the Exeo now has an even more athletic and dynamic appearance – by night and by day. The interior is further enhanced with new upholstery. The redesigned leather steering wheel now sports an even more premium look-and-feel – further evidence of the passion that SEAT dedicates to every single detail.

Reduced fuel consumption and emissions across all TDI models

From a technical perspective, the focus was on further efficiency improvements. Systematic refinements to the power units enabled the CO2 emissions of all TDI versions to be reduced by around 7 grams per kilometre. The 88 and 105 kW (120 and 143 hp) saloon models with manual transmission now both come in below the 130 grams per kilometre mark.

Exeo combines driving fun and quality with low costs

This latest generation makes the Exeo an even more attractive proposition for business class people who set just as much store by driving fun and a premium feel as they do by efficiency, utility and low costs. The Exeo unites distinctive and elegant design with state-of-the-art technology, outstanding quality and excellent value-for-money.

Exceptional precision and premium feel

Alongside sporty dynamics, the SEAT Exeo is distinguished primarily by its precision and premium feel. The exceptionally stiff bodyshell structure is the fundamental factor in the high-quality feel, the exceptional bodyroll characteristics and precise road manners. The excellent fit and finish both inside and out bear testament to the attention to detail and the high precision with which the Exeo is built in Martorell near Barcelona. Add to that the premium materials and surface finishes, plus the very latest comfort and information systems

Exeo ST with significantly enhanced utility

At a length of 4.66 metres, the Exeo is the prestigious athlete of the mid-size class. It offers space for five passengers and a generously proportioned luggage compartment. The Exeo ST estate version delivers significantly enhanced utility. With its luggage volume ranging from 442 to 1,354 litres, its wide rear opening and its high level of variability, the Exeo ST is the perfect partner for all the challenges posed by an active, sporty lifestyle or a successful business day.

State-of-the-art technology for dynamics and safety

The application of state-of-the-art technologies underpins the hallmark sporty SEAT driving experience. The engine line-up ranges from 88 to 155 kW (120 to 210 hp). The latest TDI power units with common-rail direct injection ensure excellent pulling power, smooth running characteristics and outstanding efficiency. For particularly comfort-oriented drivers, the multitronic transmission with steering-wheel shift paddles presents an alternative to the manual gearbox. This efficient automatic is available as an option for the 2.0 TSI with 147 kW (200 hp) and for the 2.0 TDI with 105 kW (143 hp).

The SEAT Exeo is also a very safe vehicle in its class. Alongside the crash-optimized bodyshell structure, its standard equipment list also boasts seven airbags – including driver knee airbag – ESP system with ABS and electronic brake force distribution and automatic tyre pressure monitoring system. The list of hi-tech options is extensive and includes a DVD navigation system, bi-xenon headlamps with dynamic cornering light and a Bose sound system.
